How to sew a potholder with pockets
Rough cut the following pieces a few inches larger than the pattern piece (7″ by 7″):
- 2 fabric (one for the back and one for the inside)
- 2 batting

Stack all 4 pieces with the batting in the middle. Pin baste with safety pins. Draw vertical lines about 1.5″ apart and topstitch to keep the layers together.

Trim to size using the pattern piece. Set aside for now.

Sew the patchwork pockets
Cut out 36 squares measuring 1.75″ square.

Sew them together in 6 rows of 6 squares.

Lay your rows out how you want to sew them together and press the seam allowances of each row as shown, in opposite directions. This will help reduce bulk and help you get sharp seam allowances.

Sew the rows together. Then use the pattern piece to cut out 1 layer of batting and a layer from lining fabric.

Stack the patchwork panel on top of the batting on top of the lining and baste around the edges. Then cut diagonally to create two triangles for the pockets.

Use your bias tape to finish the diagonal edges. You can sew this on however you want, see the video in this post to see how I did it!

Finish the pocket potholder sewing pattern
To finish the potholder, put the triangle pockets on top of the base piece with about 1″ in the middle. Center the triangles and then sew together following the base layer for size since the triangle pockets will hang off over the edges a little bit.

Trim down to the size of the potholder’s base.

Finish by sewing on the bias tape around the potholder, just like a quilt binding.
