You will love sewing this charm square pillow cover and it’s so easy you can make one for every season! This pillow cover is a really quick and fun sewing project!
Today I’m using Christmas fabric so I have a fun pillow to put out in December! You can use any seasonal fabric to change out for different holidays or pick non-seasonal fabric for everyday use!
This pillow cover is fast and fun to sew!
Charm Square Pillow Materials
- 20 charm squares
- I’m using Jingle Bells by Lindsay Wilkes (affiliate links)
- Batting
- Spray baste
- Backing fabric
- 16″ x 20″ Pillow insert
- This is not an easy insert size to find so I used a 16″ x 20″ throw pillow to stuff it instead. It was cheaper than an insert and I can use it as a throw pillow after Christmas!
Pieces to cut
I like to cut the back pieces ahead of time but I cut the rest larger than needed and trim down later.
- Front panel, 16″ by 20″ created from charm squares
- Lining piece, 16″ x 20″
- Batting piece, 16″ x 20″
- 2 back pieces 16″ by 24″
How to sew a charm square pillow
Use a 3/8″ seam allowance.
Start by creating the patchwork panel on the front. We’ll use 20 charm squares for this. Sew 5 charm squares together in a row. Sew 4 rows.
Press the seam allowances from each row in opposite directions.
Sew the rows together, nesting the seams as you go. Then press those seam allowances in one direction or open.
Lay your patchwork panel on a piece of batting and then put the lining fabric behind right side facing the table. Baste all 3 layers together and let baste spray dry.
Quilt your fabric together by sewing 1/4″ from the seams on both sides.
Trim to 16″ x 20″
Fold the back pieces in half, matching the 16″ sides. Press. Optional: sandwich bias tape along the fold of one of the back pieces for an extra pop of color.
Lay the back pieces on the top of the patchwork panel with the bias tape layer down first. The two sides will overlap in the middle. Then sew all the way around the pillow cover at 3/8.”
Trim the corners and turn right side out. Then stuff with a pillow insert!
