Quick Coaster Sewing Pattern
This tutorial starts with small squares – each coaster requires 4! Raid your stash and cut 4 squares measuring 3″ x 3.” Cut 2 each of 2 fabrics.

Now we’re going to make half-square triangles (HSTs) with these squares. Place two different squares on top of each other with right sides together.

Draw a line diagonally from the top left corner to the bottom right corner. Pin. Then sew 1/4″ from the line on both sides.

Cut through the middle of the seams along the marker line. Press the squares open to reveal 2 HSTs!

Repeat with the last two squares so you have 4 HSTs. Then sew two together in a row and repeat. Press the seam allowances in opposite directions and sew the rows together to form a square. Trim down to 4.5.”

Use spray baste to attach the block to a piece of quilt batting. Then topstitch the coaster, following the diagonal seams.

Trim off excess batting. Cut another scrap of fabric 4.5″ square for the backing.

Place the backing square face down on the HST block and pin together. Sew around the coaster 1/4″ from the edges, leaving a small opening (1-1.5″) on one side. Clip the corners of the seam allowance and turn right sides out. Press well and then topstitch around the coaster 1/8″ from the edge, closing the opening as you sew.
