I love having large hot pads in my kitchen so I don’t have to try to piece together a couple of trivets to protect my counters from hot casserole dishes. This charm square casserole hot pad has a pretty patchwork pattern and is quick to make!

I love this project because it’s made with a no binding method! I love bound edges but sometimes it’s nice to do an easier and faster method that has a totally different look!
Patchwork Casserole Hot Pad Materials
- 12 Charm Squares (I’m using Riley Blake Garden Party in Trifle)
- 1 Fat Quarter for backing
- Needled quilt batting
- Spray baste
How to sew a casserole size hot pad
We’ll start sewing the charm square casserole hot pad by making the patchwork panel for the top. Sew 4 squares together with a 1/4″ seam allowance. Make a total of 3 rows and press the seam allowances in opposite directions.
Sew the rows together, nesting the seams, and press well. Then use spray baste to attach two layers of batting to the back of the patchwork panel.
Let the spray baste dry, then topstitch the layers using whatever quilting pattern you want. I like to sew over the seam allowances about 1/8″ from each seam.
Trim off the excess batting. Use the patchwork panel as a pattern piece to cut the backing from your fat quarter.
Sew a line of stay-stitching in the center of both pieces where you’ll leave an opening for turning. This stitching is optional but will help you get a crisp line when you turn your raw edges in. The stay-stitching should be regular length stitching 3/8″ from the edge of the fabric.
Sew the top panel and backing fabric together with right sides together, leaving an opening at the top form turning, about 2-3 inches, right where your stay stitching is.
Clip the corners and turn right side out. Press well, especially focusing on the corner points and the opening. Turn the opening under, using the stitching to guide your fabric. Then topstitch around the entire hot pad 1/4″ from the edges to finish!
