How to sew a catnip pouch
Start by cutting out two pieces of the template from fabric backed with fusible interfacing. Usually when you cut two layers of fabric you will cut them mirror image of each other but for this pattern, cut both pieces exactly the same way. Don’t flip the pattern piece for the second.
You’ll have two identical pattern pieces for the back piece. We’ll cut the front later using the assembled back as our template. Fold over 3/4″ on both of the fabric pieces where shown on the pattern piece.
Then cut a 2″ length of velcro. Sew the velcro between the dotted lines on the pattern piece – sew one to the top of the flap and one to the bottom.
Place the velcro pieces together, overlapping the pieces 3/4″. Sew around the sides with a rectangle to hold in place. Backstitch a few times on the side near the velcro.
Now that the back of the pouch is assembled, we’ll use it to cut out the front. Place it right side down on the front fabric (backed with fusible interfacing). Pin in place and cut around the fabric.
Then sew all the way around the pouch with a 1/4″ seam allowance. You do not need to leave an opening for turning since we have the velcro opening. Trim the seam allowance focusing on the points and corners.
Open the velcro opening and turn the catnip pouch right side out. Use a chopstick to get the points of the knot fabric all the way pushed out.
Tie the knots
Press. Then tie the ties into knots. The tie piece is long enough to create a nice size knot. Adjust it as you see fit.
Fill the DIY Catnip Pouch
Fill it up! Grab some loose catnip and use a funnel or paper funnel to fill it up. You can find catnip at any pet store.
Now give it to your cat and wait for some fun!
