How to sew a fabric bookmark
Use a 1/4″ seam allowance.
Start by interfacing two pieces of scrap fabric that are big enough for the pattern template. Then cut 2 layers. You can use the same fabric or two different fabrics!
For the plain ribbon bookmark:
Cut two pieces of grosgrain ribbon about 5″ long. Clip the ends at a 45 degree angle to reduce fraying. Fold the ribbons in half and pin upside-down on one side of the bookmark.
Place the second bookmark piece face down and pin. Then sew around the bookmark pivoting at each corner. Leave a small opening about 1″ long on one of the long sides.
Clip the corners. Then turn right sides out and press well. Topstitch around the bookmark 1/8″ from the edges, closing the opening as you sew.
For the elastic bookmark:
Cut a piece of elastic measuring about 11.” Pin to the top and bottom of a fabric piece, centering the elastic. Then place the second piece of fabric on top of the elastic. Match up the edges and pin. Then sew around the bookmark pivoting at each corner. Leave a small opening about 1″ long on one of the long sides.
Clip the corners. Then turn right sides out and press well. Topstitch around the bookmark 1/8″ from the edges, closing the opening as you sew.
