The PRETTIEST Scrap Quilt I’ve Ever Made

Welcome to See Kate Sew! If you’re new here, sign up for my email newsletter for access to free patterns, tutorials and all the latest sewing news! Tour my sewing room HERE!

I am so excited to share the prettiest scrap quilt I’ve ever made! This quilt used up SO many of my scraps and it turned out so bright and happy!

Scrap Quilt

There are only 2 blocks in this pattern and they both use small scraps! Each block is outlined with a border made from leftover jelly roll strips, or 2.5″ strips.

I used scraps from jelly rolls for the borders and more scraps for the binding. Overall, I used so many scraps!! My scrap bins are so much lighter and this quilt is just gorgeous!

Required Materials

  • Fabric scraps
  • 2.5″ strips (or jelly roll strips)
  • Tracing paper, or FPP specialty paper
  • Cutting Mat
  • Rotary Cutter
  • Acrylic Ruler

Quilt Measurements and Information

This quilt pattern makes a lap size quilt, about 50″ x 50″, using 36 blocks. Adjust the size by adding more or less blocks.

Scrap Quilt Instructions

Start by sewing the main blocks! Pull out all your scraps and print off a bunch of paper templates.

When you’re finished sewing the blocks, we’ll add the borders. Use jelly roll scraps or cut your own strips 2.5″ wide. Grab a strip and sew it to the right side of one of your blocks. Don’t trim the strip until after you’ve sewn it to the block.

Press the strip open with the seam allowance pressed toward the strip. Use a rotary cutter to trim off the excess strip fabric, lining your ruler up with the block’s edge. Set aside the leftover strip fabric to use on another block.

Now sew a strip to the bottom of the block as shown:

Continue adding borders to your blocks. Most of the blocks will have 2 borders (right and bottom) but a few will have more borders, see the chart below:

Once your blocks are done, start assembling the quilt as shown below. The top row starts with the heart block that has a complete border. Then alternate blocks between heart and economy using the top row blocks with top borders.

The second row will start with an economy block with 3 borders. The rest of the rows will follow the same pattern as the 2nd row, alternating starting blocks.

Sew all the blocks into rows with 6 blocks across. You will have six rows. Then sew the rows together to finish your quilt top!
