lace dress with ruffle collar - see kate sew

I’m totally obsessing over this collar! It turned out just as planned on the first time, which doesn’t happen too often! I think this kind of collar is great for costumes, but if it’s not overdone can be nice for an everyday piece. The collar really inspired this whole dress. I’ll show you how to make the whole dress. I am providing the pattern pieces I drafted for myself, so if you’re about the same size, like a Medium, you can use these pieces! If not, just adjust them bigger or smaller to your liking.

2 yards lace
2 yards knit
1 invisible zipper

This pattern is the size I made for me, which is about a medium. You can adjust the pattern if you need it smaller or larger.

Ruffle Collar:
stand up collar pattern piece
44″ by 6″ for ruffle

Skirt Measurements:
your desired length (ex. 32″) by 56″ wide

if you want to add pockets, check out this tutorial.

First, cut out all your pattern pieces in both the knit and the lace. Overlay the lace pieces on top of the knit pieces and baste together along the edges.

Do the same for the ruffle piece, folding it in half.

The sandwich your ruffle in between the collar stand pieces. The ruffle should be the same length as the collar stand, so adjust accordingly.

Sew it on at 1/2″ and trim and clip the seam allowance. Then press the collar stand pieces over.

Now pin the collar stand to your neckline on the bodice. (You’ll want to assemble the side seams of your bodice before this step.)
Sew it on and finish the edge. Press the seam allowance down.
Then topstitch along the bodice piece, sewing the seam allowance down as you go. By sewing the seam allowance down, you’ll help keep the collar standing up. Topstitch right along the edge at about 1/8″.
The topstitching will also leave a nice little stitching detail.
Add an invisible zipper in the back (tutorial here). The zipper should go all the way up the collar stand and ruffle.
To make the gathered sleeves, cut out two sleeves with the ends on a fold. You’ll have a double sleeve.

Fold the sleeve over so the knit sides are together.

Stretch a piece of elastic the width of your bicep across the bottom of the sleeve, 1″ above the bottom. Pin one side in place and stretch the elastic as you sew it to the rest of the sleeve. It will gather like so:
Assemble the sleeves.

Now the bodice is ready to attach to the skirt. To assemble the skirt, sew the side seams together then gather it up to match the width of the bodice. Sew them together and you are done!

The collar is my favorite part of this dress, it looks so royal.
I belted it with a big thick belt to make it look less like a wedding gown/nightgown.

I would be totally thrilled if someone added their own ruffle collar dress to the flickr group. Just sayin’!
