Let’s sew the cutest plaid quilt! This post includes a free buffalo plaid quilt pattern and step-by-step instructions to guide you through the process!

This quilt finishes approximately 45″ by 45″ but is easily adjustable to any size you want!
Buffalo Plaid Quilt Materials + Yardage
- 5″ charm squares – 25 of each color
- If cutting your own squares you’ll need 1/3 yard each color
- Iron and ironing board or pressing mat
- Quilter’s clapper, optional
For the Buffalo Plaid pattern I recommend 3 similar colors and 1 white or off white color. This will give you an ombre effect and is easy to match to home decor!

How to sew a buffalo plaid quilt
This quilt can either be sewn in rows or blocks. I prefer sewing blocks of 4 and then sewing them into rows.
Sew the fabric squares in pairs as shown. Each block will have one set of each pair. Press the seam allowance up on one of them and down on the other. Then interlock the seams and sew together with a vertical seam. Repeat for all of the blocks.
Sew 5 blocks together into a row. You’ll sew a total of 5 rows.
Press the seam allowances of each of the rows in opposite directions. This will include all vertical seams. Press the first row to the right, the second to the left and so on.
Then sew the rows together to complete your quilt top!
I used one of the colors from my quilt to bind it and I love the gorgeous finish! How cute would this be for a bedspread or baby quilt?!
