Make a DIY Princess Leia baby costume with this simple tutorial! After making a baby Yoda costume, I couldn’t handle not making a Princess Leia bun hat and costume to go with it!

Princess Leia buns on a baby is hilarious and the costume was really easy to make, too! If you’re a big Star Wars fan, check out my “the fourth is with us” tee!

This hat is so great because the ruching in the middle looks like her hair is parted! Hah!

MATERIALS FOR LEIA COSTUME

–Brown knit fabric
–2 large bun maker sponges
–White knit fabric
–Grey felt
–Glitter iron-on vinyl
–1/4″ elastic
-Printable Templates/SVG files, click below to download

Some browsers don’t like downloading SVG files. If you have trouble getting the belt pattern, click here.

The hat pattern will probably fit most sizes about 6months to 3yrs. The belt is sized for a 12-18M baby. Enlarge or shrink the patterns as needed for larger or smaller children!

INSTRUCTIONS FOR BABY LEIA DRESS

Leia wears a white turtleneck dress. I couldn’t find any pre-made dresses that worked for this (I mean, I guess white turtleneck baby dresses are not a common purchase?!) so I made my own starting with the Pippa Peplum Pattern + the Add-on Dress Pattern. I used size 18M but since this dress comes in sizes NB to girls 10, you can make this costume for any size!

All I had to do to adjust this pattern was raise the neckline and add a turtleneck band. To raise the neckline, use the back neckline for both the front and back.

To add a turtle neck collar, cut a band 3″ by the length of the neckband. Use the neckline to measure the band.

Sew the band together at the short edge then fold over.

TUTORIAL FOR SILVER LEIA BELT

Cut grey felt using the template provided. You can use a cutting machine with the SVG or print it out and cut by hand. I used my Cricut Maker, which is why they are cut so nicely!

Cut another layer with silver glitter iron-on vinyl. Use the EasyPress or an iron to iron the glitter to the felt. Peel off the clear sheet.

Glue elastic to both sides of the belt.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR LEIA BUN HAT

For the Leia bun hat, you can either start with a brown beanie or make a wrap style hat as shown.

Print the pattern template from above and tape the paper together.

Fold under 1/2″ at the bottom hem and press. Stitch using a zig zag stitch.

Baste along the top curved edge with a wide stitch length. Pull the threads to gather the fabric.

Gather it as much as you can then fold in half, meeting the ruching with right sides together. Sew. Turn right side out and your hat is done!

To add Leia bun, cut a scrap of fabric and put the bun maker in the middle. Pull fabric through the middle and glue. Then wrap the bun sponge with the fabric, folding it over and gluing as you go. Trim the excess fabric. Put a bunch of hot glue in the middle of the bun and stick it to your hat. Repeat for the other side.

Dress, Leia buns, silver belt – done!

Happy Halloween Star Wars nerds!
