ohio star quilt block tutorial – how to sew this easy block!

Welcome to See Kate Sew! If you’re new here, sign up for my email newsletter for access to free patterns, tutorials and all the latest sewing news! Tour my sewing room HERE!

The Ohio Star is one of my favorite quilt blocks to sew. It’s such a classic block that is easy and fun! Today I am sharing an Ohio star quilt block tutorial with easy instructions.

I wrote about the Quilts of Valor program this summer – it’s an awesome program matching quilters and quilts with veterans! Read more here. While a whole quilt may seem like a big project to take on, especially during the holidays, sewing just 1 quilt block only takes a few minutes!

So the Sew4Good December Challenge Calendar includes sewing quilt blocks! You can save them up to sew into a quilt, or find a buddy or two to complete a quilt with. Sometimes local quilt guilds do projects like this together so you can look into donating your blocks to a local quilt guild, too.

First cut out the following patches:

Cut 4 squares measuring 3.5″ by 3.5″ from Color 1 for the corners. The block corners are made of plain squares.

Cut 1 square measuring 3.5″ by 3.5″ from Color 2 for the center.

Cut 2 squares from each Color 1 and Color 2 measuring 4.5″ by 4.5″.

To make the points of the star, we are going to make Half Square Triangles (HST) and then combine them to create Quarter Square Triangles (QST).

Place 4.5” squares of Color 1 and Color 2 on top of each other with right sides together.

Draw a diagonal line from one corner to the other.

Sew along the sides of the drawn line, 1/4” away from line on either side. Cut down line with rotary cutter, being careful not to cut through the stitching. Open blocks and press seam allowances to one side.  Repeat so you have four Half Square Triangles (HST).
