Today we have Sachiko from Tea Rose Home! I know you’ve seen that ruffle blouse (below) around. Her blog is full of lots of great stuff, including tons of tutorials. I think this is the cutest felt food I’ve ever seen. One of my favorite parts about Tea Rose Home is the quilted projects, like this five fat quarter scarf. I also want to try this sweater to jacket refashion! Lots to do! Today Sachiko is sharing a super cute pleated skirt tutorial.
Hi everyone! I am Sachiko from Tea Rose Home. On my blog I share sewing, clothes repurposing, basket makeovers, quilt making and much more. I love everything and anything that lets me be creative. If you love link parties, visit me on Wednesdays to join the fun!
My pleated project that I am sharing today is a skirt that I made for my little girl. I think the black with small white prints gives this skirt a classy look (would you say “a mini Audrey Hepburn”?). Of course it would be so fun to use brightly colored patterned fabric to make this skirt too. :)
{You will need and before you begin}
Fabric—cut 16″ X 44″(with of the fabric) for the skirt, 2 – 2 1/2″ X 44″ of strips for the belt part. So, when you buy fabric for the skirt, you need 21 1/2″. My daughter is five going on six, but small for her age. If you are making this for someone taller, you will need more fabric.
Lace
Matching thread
{How to}
1. Mark the center on the waist part of the skirt fabric. Mark 1/2″ to both sides of the center, then start marking every 1″.
2. Allow for a 1/2″ seam allowance on both sides.
3. Fold the fabric and make pleats.
4. Sew the marked line with sewing machine.
5. Fold the fabric in half right sides together. Mark 3 1/2″ from the top to leave it open and sew from that marking.
6. Open the seam and press with an iron. Sew around the opening.
7. Connect the long strips to make a belt. I cut one of the ends diagonally for a clean finish. After I sew two strips together, I cut the long strip to 56″long. Fold in half (long ways) and press to make a crease in the middle. Open, and folds both ends towards the middle marking and press with an iron. Pin the belt around the right side of the waist and sew.
8. Fold the belt towards the wrong side of the fabric and sew.
9. To finish up the hem, cut the lace (make sure it matches the length of the hem line) and use fray check for the both ends. Sew the ends together to make a giant loop.
10. Pin the lace to the right side of the skirt, and sew it on with zigzag. Fold the fabric so that the tip of the lace is pointing down. Top stitch around the hem.
11. It is ready to wear!
The opening on the side is there, so I recommend to wear longer shirt on top. My little girl actually loved the skirt, little different than usual elastic one. :)
Thank you Kate for having me here, it was a lot of fun!

Sachiko! This is beautiful. So classy and a great shape. The pleats add great structure to the top. Bravo!
