ruffle hot pad tutorial

Welcome to See Kate Sew! If you’re new here, sign up for my email newsletter for access to free patterns, tutorials and all the latest sewing news! Tour my sewing room HERE!

Materials:
-1 solid cotton
-1 print cotton
-quilt batting
-twill tape

ruffle:
2 1/2 by 54″

For the ruffle, cut out a long strip of fabric, 2.5″ wide by 54″ long.

Fold the strip in half and press.

Run a basting stitch along the bottom edge, 1/4″ from the bottom.

Pull the baste stitching to gather up the fabric into a ruffle.

The ruffle needs to be able to go all the way around the hot pad, so set the ruffle aside for now and we’ll come back to it. You might need to adjust the length later.

To make the hot pad…Cut out two 8″ squares.
Cut out two layers of quilt batting for the center, also in 8″ squares. Round the corners to match the fabric

Two layers fabric, two layers batting.

Round the corners using a round object as your template. A roll of packing tape works great!
Now stack both layers of batting on underneath one layer of fabric. Pin the ruffle on, with the raw edge of the ruffle matching the edge of the hot pad.

Pin it on all the way around, tapering the ruffle off of the hot pad at one of the corners.

Pin on a little piece of twill tape, about 4-5″ long, folded over. This will make a little hanging tab. Make sure it is facing to the inside of the hot pad.

Stack the other piece of fabric on top of the whole thing and pin it down.

Sew all the way around, leaving about a 3″ opening.

Trim and clip the edges. Turn it right sides out and topstitch all the way around, closing up the hole as you go.

Done!

This will definitely look cute hanging by your oven! At least cuter than the burnt one that is currently there, if you’re like me!
