Faux fur pom pom materials
- Faux fur fabric (affiliate links)
- Shannon brand colored faux fur is amazing! I especially love their alpaca fur though it is quite long and shaggy
- Smaller pieces of faux fur are a great idea if you don’t want to have a ton leftover and they often come in fun colors. You can purchase smaller sheets of fur at craft stores and fabric stores.
- Embroidery floss or thick thread
- Embroidery needle
- Polyfil fiberfill stuffing
- Super glue
- Keychain hardware with chain
- Fabric scissors
The thread will hold the pom pom in its round shape so be sure to choose a sturdy thread. If in doubt, you can double your thread or use a multi strand embroidery floss.

Sizes for fur pom poms
The included pattern has 3 sizes for a variety of projects. Below are diameters and suggested projects for each size.
The final diameter will vary based on the thickness and stretch of your fabric and how much you stuff it. Keep your fur length in mind, too, when choosing a size.
- Small
- 2.5″ approximate diameter
- Best for keychains and child beanie
- Medium
- 3″ approx diameter
- Best for keychain, child beanie or adult double pom beanie
- Large
- 4″ approximate diameter
- Best for adult size beanie
For a very large pom, the large size can be made even bigger with a long shag fabric such as the alpaca fabric mentioned above. To experiment with different sizes you can use a bowl or other round object for tracing a circle on the back of your fabric.
How to make a pom pom out of faux fur
Now I’ll show you how to make faux fur pom poms! Start by cutting one layer of faux fur with the pattern template. Fold your fabric in half. The template is a half circle, put the straight edge on the fold of the fabric.
Sometimes faux fur is pretty thick and hard to fold in half. If that is the case you can simply print the template twice and tape the half circles together to make a full circle.
To make the pom we will hand baste around the perimeter of your circle. This is also called a running stitch.
Tie a knot and start sewing baste stitches about 1/4″ long and 1/4″ apart.
When you reach the point where you started gently pull the thread to gather the edges of the circle.
When you have almost closed the circle, stuff some fiberfill stuffing inside so the pom keeps its shape.
Finish gathering the edges and adjust the fur as needed. Tie thread ends together. Sew a few stitches across the pom pom opening to close it up, creating a web like pattern. Pull the threads tight each time to cinch the opening closed.
Tie a knot when you are done. Don’t trim the thread yet because we will use the extra thread to attach the pom pom to the beanie or keychain. Dab a dot of superglue on the knot and let it dry.
Make a faux fur pom for a beanie
Find a plain beanie or an old one that needs to be spruced up! Here are a few I am using:
If you are going to sew this to a beanie, use the excess thread from gathering to sew it to the top of your hat.
Make a few stitches into the top of the beanie and back into the Pom pom before tying off at the top of the beanie under the Pom pom.
Use super glue again to dab the stitches and secure.
Make a fur pom pom keychain
If you are making a keychain, use the excess thread to tie the Pom pom onto the keychain chain.
Sew a few stitches around the chain and back into the pom pom (not just the thread) before tying off.
I like to make it super secure with about 5 stitches through the pom pom and into the keychain and then a double knot with the thread. Use super glue to secure the thread/knot before trimming it.
Make it a faux fur cat toy
This project is easy to adapt into a cat toy! Add some catnip before you finish the pom or tie it to a rope or stick to entice your cat to play. My cat is kinda old and not as playful as she was but at least I got her to look at it!
Faux fur pom poms can also be attached to scarves or blankets for a fun extra touch!
