A new table runner will spruce up your table and brighten your day! This table runner sewing pattern uses jelly roll strips for a quick, satisfying finish!

I love the checkerboard pattern, plus it’s quick to put together since we’ll use strip piecing and cutting to make it.

Jelly Roll Table Runner Materials
- 14 Jelly Roll Strips, or cut your own 2.5″ wide
- For the checkerboard look, use 7 solid and 7 print
- Batting
- Spray baste
Make this with scraps instead! If you have lots of little scraps, cut them down to 2.5″ squares and make your own design!

Table Runner Final Measurements
This project will finish approximately 63″ x 14.” Adjust by adding more or less rows for different sizes.
Table Runner Sewing Pattern Instructions
Start by sewing 7 strips together, starting with a print and alternating solid/print/solid until you have 7 strips sewn together.

Sew another set of 7 strips together, starting with a solid and ending with a solid.

Press the seam allowances of the two strip panels all in one direction. Then cut the strips down to pieces 2.5″ wide – you should get 16 pieces from each panel for a total of 32 pieces.

Now we’ll sew the pieces together, alternating the pieces from the two different panels to create a checkerboard pattern. For more variation in the pattern, turn some of the pieces 180* before sewing into the table runner. Press the seam allowances in opposite directions before sewing for help matching the corners.

Sew all 32 strips together and press well.

Cut a piece of batting a little bit larger than your patchwork panel. Spray baste to hold together. Then topstitch the panel to the batting with any pattern you want.

Trim off the excess batting.

Place the patchwork panel face down on a piece of fabric and trace it to make a backing. You can piece this from two lengths of fabric if needed.
Sew the panel and backing together with ride sides together and a 3/8″ seam allowance. Leave an opening in your stitching about 2-3″ on one side of the table runner.

Clip corners and trim seam allowance. Then press table runner well. Topstitch around the table runner 1/8″ from the edges, closing the opening as you sew. Press again and your table runner is ready to use!
