I love almost everything about having a dog. The only thing I don’t like is picking up dog poo while we are out on walks, it’s such a mess! But since I know it has to be done, I made a DIY dog poop bag holder to make it a little cuter and convenient! This little pouch is fun to sew and oh so cute!
This DIY poop bag dispenser can be made in any cute fabric and it’s the perfect size for a standard roll of poop bags! You’ll be the coolest pet owner in the neighborhood! This is also the perfect accessory to make for a new dog owner – gift it with a pack of bags.
The front has a zipper for refilling the holder and the back has an opening so you can dispense one bag at a time! This little diy dog bag dispenser attaches to your leash d-ring so it is always handy when you’re ready to walk your furry friend! The bag will dangle on your leash handle so you never forget them. You can also clip it to a waist belt loop or backpack. Then just toss the bag into the trash and keep walking!
Dog Poop Bag Dispenser DIY Materials

- I’m using two prints from my fabric line Spotted

- 3/4″ swivel hook with a d-ring bottom (also called lobster claw clasp)

How to make a doggie poop bag holder
1/4 inch seam allowances included.
Let’s get started! The DIY dog poop bag holder is very easy to sew and it’s fun, too! This project is great for a beginner that wants to get into bag sewing.
Cut out the following pieces:
- 2 dispenser sides
- 2 zipper sides
- 1 tab, this is a small rectangle piece
Fuse all pieces with fusible interfacing.
Sew the tab
To sew the tab, fold under 1/4″ on the long edges. Then fold in half to match up the folded edges.
Topstitch the edges 1/8″ from the folds. Fold tab around swivel hook to create a loop and pin. Set aside.
Sew the zipper
Pin one zipper side piece face down on the zipper, lining up the edge of the fabric with the edge of the zipper. If your zipper is long enough, put the fabric in the middle of the zipper so you don’t hit the zipper pull while sewing. Align your machine needle all the way to the right and sew as close to the zipper teeth as you can. You do not have to use a zipper foot for this.
Repeat with the other zipper side piece. Open and press, then topstitch along both sides of the fabric.
Pin the swivel to the bottom of the zipper and baste it in place with the edges of the tab hanging over about 1/4″.
Sew the dog poo bag dispenser opening
Place the opening side pieces right sides together and pin. Draw the lines from the pattern piece onto the fabric so you know where to sew.
Sew the pieces together along the lines, backstitching where the stitching meets the opening.
Fold the top flaps down so they fold down on themselves. You will have an opening at the center. Topstitch around the opening if desired. This is the part of the baggie where the bags will come out.
Assemble the dog waste bag holder
Open the zipper so the teeth are in the middle of the bag.
Place opening piece face down on the zipper piece and line up all the corners. Pin
Sew the sides and top and bottom of the bag, backstitching at each beginning and end. Do not sew the corner cutouts yet.
Clip off excess zipper and tab fabric.
With the bag still inside out, hold it up and pinch the corners so they are perpendicular to the side seams.
Pinch together and pin.
Sew along the pinched at 1/4″, backstitching
Insert poop bag rolls inside and pull one out through the opening. Zip it up and you’re ready to hit the town! This bag will be a stylish addition to your dog walking experience.

I had heaps of fun sewing this project. I have to admit I absorbed too much fabric when sewing the zipper part, but it will still be fine. I might have to sew another one, just for the satisfaction of getting it all lined up.

I’m so glad to hear that Judith! <3
