Strip Mug Wrap Instructions
To make a scrappy mug cozy, collect a whole bunch of fabrics and cut them into 1″ strips. Then cut them into pieces 5″ long. You’ll need about 20 strips.
Sew strips together until it is long enough for your mug cozy size. Press the seam allowances to one side.
Interface the panel with lightweight fusible interfacing. Use spray baste to attach a layer of quilt batting to the back.
Quilt the layers together by topstitching over the seam allowances between each stripe.
Then use the pattern piece to cut out 1 main piece with the striped panel.
Instead of a striped panel you can use the pattern piece to cut one piece of fabric for the outside.
Sew a fabric mug cozy
Use a 1/4″ seam allowance.
Start by cutting your fabric and gathering your supplies. Cut 1 lining using the main pattern piece. You’ll also need a button (bigger the better here!), 8″ of 1/8″ elastic and a fabric scrap.
Fold the elastic into a loop and then fold the fabric scrap over the ends. Sew with a narrow stitch length (1.8mm) back and forth a few times. This tab will keep your elastic from slipping out of the mug cozy.
Center the fabric scrap on one short end of the front panel, making sure the fabric is within the 1/4″ seam allowance so it won’t be showing on the outside of the mug cozy. Then place the lining on top of the panel – right sides together. Sew around the mug cozy with 1/4,” leaving an opening on one of the long sides.
Clip corners and trim seam allowance. Turn right sides out and press. Then topstitch around the mug cozy. Sew on a button about 3/4″ from the short edge and you’re done!
