In this post I’m sharing dollar store sewing hacks you have to try! These hacks are inexpensive and will make your sewing experience so much better!
All of the supplies I got in this post are from the Dollar Tree store. I had fun browsing their aisles for crafting ideas and dollar store sewing tools!
From sewing room organization to tricky sewing tools and more – there are some great dollar store finds just waiting for you! This post includes my favorite finds for your sewing space from my recent haul. You will want to head to your local dollar tree store STAT!
Dollar Tree Sewing Hacks #1: Quilt Design Blocks
Use these tiny little blocks to make your own set of quilt design blocks. This is a really fun activity to help you design your own quilts. We will use a few materials – all from the dollar store:
- Crafter’s Square Wood Craft Cubes (36 pieces)
- Masking Tape
- Acrylic paint
- Beauty blenders
- These are awesome for painting small projects because they don’t leave paintbrush lines or bubbles like a dabber would. You can wash them out and reuse them!
- Mod Podge
To make these wooden quilt design blocks, start by making half-square triangles by taping the blocks off diagonally. Use the Mod Podge to create a bleed layer, just paint it over the block and tape with the blending tool. Once that dries, paint with your color on. Repeat with a few solid blocks, quarter square triangles and different colors so you have lots of variation to design your blocks with. Once the paint dries, you can paint the other sides of the blocks with other colors or block designs.
Use Mod Podge to seal the project when you are all done, just paint another layer over the dried paint. Now move around the blocks until you have a cute design!
#2: Iron-on Patches to Fix Clothing or Bags
Hack your wardrobe with this simple idea! Grab a pack or two of iron on patches. I found these in the sticker section and they are SO cute.
- Crafter’s Square Iron On Patches
Patches are perfect for patching up holes in clothing, reinforcing knees, or just for decoration! You can even use them on bags. Just iron these on using a press cloth!
#3: Washcloth for Baby Burb Cloths
The washcloths in the bath section are a great way to get a little bit of terry cloth or towel fabric to use in your absorbent projects! These are great for homemade paper towels, baby bibs and more!
Try using a washcloth for the backside of my burp cloth pattern.
#4: File Folders for Batch Sewing Patterns
When batch sewing items you need to make sure your patterns last! That’s where these file folders come in! They are thick enough to withstand lots of pinning and cutting so you don’t have to reprint your pattern! Just tape or trace your pattern to the file folder to make yourself a heavy duty template. This template will last so much longer than a paper pattern.
- Jot File Folders
Dollar Store Sewing Hack #5: Wire Bins for Precut Fabrics
These gold wire baskets are the cutest way to store charm packs and fat quarters! I found these in the organization section and they are the perfect size for precuts.
- Storage Essentials Wire Basket
It’s easy to flip through your fat quarters or 5″ squares with these cute baskets!
#6: Rotating Bath Organizer
I love this rotating bath organizer – it’s so handy in the sewing room to keep everything at arm’s reach! Stick in your rotary cutter, scissors, fabric markers, fray check, glue sticks and more! Every crafter could use this in their craft room!
This was actually $5 (not $1.25) but the spinning element makes it worth the splurge!
#7: Organizer Case Sewing Kit
This little plastic organizer is just asking to be a sewing kit! It fits buttons, needles, thread, a measuring tape, little scissors, ribbon, bobbins, pins and more! You will be ready for your next sewing project.
This makes a great sewing kit for on-the-go or a kit to give as a gift.
#8: Magnetic Tin Pin Storage
This is one of the easiest dollar store sewing hacks – these cute magnetic tin is perfect for pin storage!
Not just because it is a great size but because the magnet on the back can help you pick up your pins! Find this in the school or office supply section.
#9: Boba Straws
You will never turn a tube the same way after trying this boba straw sewing hack! The dollar store had a 50 pack of bubble tea straws so I picked one up. You’ll also need a chopstick, but I didn’t see any at my store.
To turn a tube or strap really quickly, put the boba straw inside the tube. Then push the top of the tube down into the straw with a chopstick.
Push the chopstick all the way down and the tube will come out right side out!
This hack will save you so much time!!
#10: Scarf Hanger for hanging knit fabric
Find these scarf hangers in the home section – each has 5 openings that you can use to hang fabrics! These are great for knit fabrics and other draping things that are hard to stack. Get a few and you can easily flip through your fabric selection!
#11: Pencil Sharpener
This doesn’t seem like a sewing notion but there are a few types of pencils that I use in sewing. I use wax pencils to mark fabric and always forget about having a sharpener! These also work for wax transfer pencils.
#12 Mini Lint Rollers for easy clean up
These mini lint rollers come in a pack of two. I found them at the front of the store but they may also be in the laundry section.
Lint rollers are great for getting threads off of your clothes and fabric but also essential if you are working with precuts like charm squares that shed little pieces of fiber!
#13: Retractable Card Holders for Scissors
Grab these retractable badge holders in the office supply section. Snap it around your little scissors and then clip it to your shirt. Your scissors will always be handy!
#14: Removable Hooks Sewing Machine Hack
This is a nifty hack to help you get even seam allowances. Grab some removable hooks from the office section and put it on your machine. Butt your fabric up against it as you sew to keep your fabric nice and straight. This is best for wider seam allowances since you can’t get the hook too close to the presser foot. Align your needle closer and try a thinner presser foot for smaller seam allowances. The hook comes off super easily when you’re done!
#15: Binder Clips
Binder clips are great for holding binding on quilts as you sew it on! Binder clips are so much stronger than sewing clips which is great since quilts can be bulky and knock sewing clips off.
