Dollar Tree Quilting Supplies – DIY Barn Quilt Sign
First, let’s make a cute sign for our sewing room! This is a wooden sign made with a wooden square, painters tape, and acrylic paint.
Grab two colors or paint (or more!) and paint brushes if you need them! This is a great deal for a wooden square! I don’t love the Dollar Tree paint quality – it’s thin, leaks and requires a lot of layers so if you have acrylic paint from a craft store I recommend that. The Dollar Tree paint is what I used for this tutorial and my sign is not perfect, but still cute!
I used black and white to create a high contrast ohio start block. First paint the entire square with white or your background fabric. Let dry and then paint another layer. Use a hair dryer to speed up the drying process if you want. The square is about 5.5″ so we are going to use a pencil to split it up into 3 rows of 3 squares. Draw lines 1 7/8″ wide.
Use tape to mark off the inside square. Paint and let dry. Then peel off the top two strips of tape and tape off quarter triangles.
We’ll do this in the 4 middle blocks on the outside. Paint, let dry and reposition the tape to get all the triangles painted.
Once your sign is finished, do touchups with a very small brush and you’re ready to display this in your sewing room!
Mason Jar Sewing Kit
This is a really fun project! Just grab a mason jar and a sewing kit. Click below to get the template and let’s make an adorable sewing kit! Get the written tutorial and the TEMPLATES here!
I was thrilled to find a mason jar at the dollar store – way cheaper than craft stores sell them for! You can also use a fat quarter from the fabric section. Grab a tiny sewing kit from checkout line or craft section.
This is the perfect size for a sewing kit and it makes an awesome gift!
Napkin Holder for Quilting Rulers – Dollar Tree Quilt Supplies
I love this little hack! Grab a napkin holder from the kitchen section – this makes a great holder for smaller quilting rulers!
You can also use the napkin holder as a little stand for your quilt patterns! Just set your pattern in so it is propped up while you sew.
Dish Rack for Quilt Rulers
Grab a white wire dish rack in the kitchen or container section. This one is great for larger rulers and other quilting and sewing helps. You can see them all and flip through them to grab the one you need.
Dollar Tree Quilting Mini Drawers for notions
These little mini drawers are so cute for notions! I am going to fill them up and put them in my daughter’s sewing space, right by her machine, full of new thread, a seam ripper and other sewing essentials!
They are also the perfect size for just storing thread! I can fit 3 Aurifil threads in each drawer, so 6 per unit.
Paper clips and post-its for organizing fabric pieces
Head to the office supply section and grab a pack of post-it notes and a pack of paper clips! These are great for organizing quilt blocks in order for your rows so you can take them all the machine at the same time.
Tablecloth for an instant quilt design wall
Grab a flannel backed tablecloth and a pack of pushpins. Pin the tablecloth to a wall with the top side facing the wall.
The flannel backing will hold quilt blocks so you can arrange them easily – just like a felt board! It’s an instant design wall where you can try out your block arrangement before committing!
Pill box for bobbin storage
The medicine section has these awesome pill boxes – they are pretty big! I love these for holding bobbins or even organizing sewing machine needles!
Organizer box for bobbins
Another great way to store your bobbins – this little organizer box is in the craft section!
Woven basket for notions storage from the Dollar Tree
Okay this was just the cutest little basket and I couldn’t leave it at the store!
But it is also a soft storage solution for those tiny notions you want to keep by your machine, such as machine feet, different colored bobbins, pins and more! It’s so cute and so handy!
Dollar Tree Quilting – Yarn for tying quilts
Sometimes I just love a simple yarn tied quilt! The dollar store sells skeins of yarn that are just the right size for tying a quilt and for only $1.25 – it’s a steal! You’ll need a yarn needle to help you. Check out my tutorial for yarn-tied blankets here.
I used the yarn to make a tiny quilt for Barbie and I love how it turned out!
Pool noodles for quilt storage
If you are storing quilts in folded stacks, this is your sign to stop! Leaving quilts in a folded pile causes creasing and wears down the quilt. For better preservation, store your quilts rolled up on pool noodles.
You can use pins pushed through the layers of the quilt and into the noodle to secure. If your quilt is longer than one noodle, just connect two together!
Shelf liner for nonslip pedal
If you have trouble keeping your pedal from slipping, grab a nonslip shelf liner from the kitchen section. This comes in a roll but you only need a little piece. Cut some off and put it under your sewing machine pedal.
Project bins
I found these flat white organizers in the bins and baskets section. I love them to use as project bins – plus there are smaller ones that come in packs of 3.
These are great for fabric pulls for your works in progress. You can even stick all the other supplies you need inside the small bins and put them together!
These are also stackable, making them a great small-space storage solution!
Makeup brush for cleaning machine
Use a powder brush from the makeup section to dust off your machine every week or so. This is super soft and get in the nooks and crannies around your needle and bobbin!
